Kia Seltos Named 2021 Best New Model and Best Buy Award in the Subcompact SUV Segment by Kelley Blue Book

Article Source: Kelley Blue Book

The 2021 Kia Seltos has won Kelley Blue Book’s 2021 Best Buy Award in the subcompact SUV segment because of its excellent interior packaging, smart combination of practical and upscale interior amenities, and wide array of advanced safety features. It does all of this with a starting price of around $23,000, which makes the Seltos an undeniably good value. Those characteristics impressed KBB so much that they also selected it as this year’s Best New Model in the KBB Best Buy Award program.

As we saw last year with the Kia Telluride – the 2020 Best Buy Awards Best New Model – when it comes to entering a popular segment, Kia does its homework. In the case of the Seltos, that meant ensuring there is enough space in the front and rear rows for all passengers. Kia also placed a high priority on easy-to-use connectivity and tech. An 8-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity come standard on the Seltos. Also standard is Bluetooth technology that allows you to connect two devices at the same time.

Inner space

It may sound strange to describe a subcompact SUV as roomy, but it’s appropriate here. The Seltos has front seats that are comfortable and there’s plenty of head and legroom, but the real shocker is the space in the second row. Not only is rear-seat legroom the best in its class, but its 38 inches of room is comparable to what you would find in a full-size sedan. And, everyone sitting in the back of the Seltos has reclining seats.

Not only that, the extra interior space does not come at the expense of this Kia’s cargo volume. It has best-in-class space for cargo behind the second row; fold down those seats and the cargo volume swells to 62.8 cu ft., also best in class.

Affordable safety

Even the lowest-priced version – the Seltos S – comes standard with safety features such as lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. This is in addition to standard front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags, full-length side-curtain airbags, hill-start assist, downhill brake control, rear occupant alert, and tire-pressure monitoring

All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on the LX, and AWD models come with a lock mode for added traction. Seltos SUVs that come with AWD – standard on every trim level but the S – also come with independent rear suspension for better ride and handling. Stepping up to higher trim levels adds adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, and safe-exit assist. You can also get highway-driving assist. This semi-autonomous system controls steering, acceleration, and braking based on the vehicle’s cruise control settings.

Standout value

Kia’s pricing of the Seltos gives buyers a choice of trim levels at the same base price. Both the LX and the S start at $23,100. If you want standard AWD, look to the LX. However, if you opt for the S, you still benefit from additional safety features. For a mere $1,500 more, you also get AWD. Even if you wanted to go all out, choosing the Seltos SX with its turbocharged engine and AWD and adding a sunroof and two-tone roof, pricing is still a reasonable $30,000.

But the Kia Seltos isn’t just a vehicle that checks all the right boxes. It’s how Kia integrated these elements into a subcompact SUV that’s versatile, easy to use, and comfortable that makes it such a great choice. The Seltos is one of the best-looking subcompact SUVs on the market. The spacious interior is loaded with features that are intuitive to use. You can get the Seltos at the lowest price with plenty of impressive advanced safety features, with even more available. Not to be forgotten, it’s also backed by one of the best warranties in the business. It’s for all of these reasons that KBB chose the Kia Seltos as the Best New Model for 2021.

Kia Telluride Wins “Triple Crown” of Prestigious Automotive Awards

2020 Kia Telluride is Award-Winning SUV

SUV Captures 2020 NACTOY Utility Vehicle of the Year, MotorTrend SUV of the Year and Car and Driver 10Best

IRVINE, Calif., January 14, 2020 — The Telluride is Kia’s winningest and most awarded vehicle in the past year and the first sport-utility vehicle to win the “Triple Crown” of the auto industry’s most prestigious accolades: 2020 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year from North American Car of the Year (NACTOY)1MotorTrend SUV of the Year; and a Car and Driver 10 Best.

The sweep caps an incredible 2019 for the Telluride, which captured not only the three most illustrious automotive industry awards, but also numerous “Best of” honors and top accolades from other prestigious online, print and video outlets.

“Winning this ‘Triple Crown’ of prizes is a spectacular achievement for the Telluride,” said Michael Cole, president, Kia Motors America (KMA), “and also for Kia Motors America. This is not just the unprecedented achievement of a terrific vehicle, but it’s also a high-water mark for the brand and places Kia at the forefront of global automakers.”

NACTOY jurors voted Telluride number one based on months of test drives, comparisons and other evaluations. Criteria for MotorTrend’s premier award are best in safety, efficiency, value, design, engineering and performance of intended function. Car and Driver 10Best winners are the magazine’s top vehicles in an array of categories, including value, driving dynamics and mission fulfilment.

In addition to being the Kia vehicle that has collected the most awards within its first year on the market, the Telluride is also one of KMA’s best-selling vehicles. Since going on sale in early 2019, nearly 60,000 Tellurides have been sold and demand continues to outpace supply. Conceived, designed, and developed in the U.S. specifically for the U.S. market, the Telluride is proudly assembled in West Point, Georgia, and is the first Kia vehicle to be exported from the United States.

Kia Telluride Wins 2020 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year

DETROIT, Mich., January 13, 2020 — Today, the Kia Telluride was named 2020 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year™ by the distinguished North American Car of the Year jury (NACTOY).1 This first-time honor for the Kia brand caps an unprecedented number of awards for Kia’s three-row SUV from major consumer and enthusiast publications since the Telluride appeared in dealerships early last year.

“We are immensely proud of Telluride capturing North American Utility of the Year™,” said Sean Yoon, CEO of Kia Motors North America. “It solidifies years of effort on behalf of every Kia employee to build vehicles consumers desire and industry experts value. Winning the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year™ is an honor that marks Kia’s arrival in the top tier of the world’s automotive manufacturers.”

NACTOY jurors voted Telluride number one after spending months of deliberation, including test drives, comparisons and other evaluations. To be eligible, vehicles must be all-new or substantially new and must be available at dealerships close to the announcement of the awards. The Telluride prevailed over a field of 12 semi-finalists and three finalists in the utility category.

“The Kia Telluride makes owning an SUV look cool while offering the smooth ride and rich interior of a luxury vehicle without the luxury price,” said Kirk Bell, NACTOY secretary-treasurer.

The Telluride continues to be one of Kia Motors America’s best-selling vehicles. Since going on sale, nearly 60,000 Tellurides have been sold and demand continues to outpace supply. Conceived, designed, developed, and assembled in the U.S. specifically for the U.S. market in West Point, Georgia, Telluride is the first Kia vehicle to be exported from the United States.

  • Right-sized; slots between iconic Soul and sleek Sportage
  • Powered by efficient 2.0-liter or spirited 1.6-liter Turbo four-cylinder engines
  • Available all-wheel drive with torque vectoring
  • Well-appointed interior laden with smart technology to enhance the on-road experience harkens to Telluride levels of refinement

LOS ANGELES, November 20, 2019 – Rugged, refined and right-sized, the all-new Seltos energizes the Entry SUV segment with a personality all its own. As a utility vehicle with an abundance of attitude, the Seltos arrives in the U.S. with modern styling and a penchant for adventure, whether that means everyday driving around town or in the wilderness on weekends. Complementing Kia’s robust SUV lineup, and following on the heels of the Telluride, the Seltos slots between the popular Soul and Sportage models, providing a comfortable and tech-savvy cabin, a choice of two well-tested engines include a spirited 175-horsepower 1.6-liter turbo, and an available all-wheel drive system1 with torque vectoring control and a lock mode to handle more severe road conditions. It is available in five trims: LX, EX, S 2.0L, S 1.6T and SX. Looking at all it has to offer, it’s no wonder the 2021 Kia Seltos is poised and ready to become a true contender in one of the fastest-growing segments in the industry when it goes on sale in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2020. While complete pricing will be available closer to the Seltos’ on-sale date, the LX AWD will have a starting price below $22,000 and the S FWD will have a similar starting price.

Distinctive Design

Similar to Telluride’s design theme, the Seltos is a marriage of bold design and delicate details and stands apart from rivals with its strong, upright stance. The tall front end and 7.2-inch ground clearance translate to a tough attitude and an adventurous spirit. Its assertive presence is spearheaded by Kia’s signature tiger-nose grille that includes unexpected diamond-like detail. Chiseled surfaces and well-drawn lines lead back to a distinctive profile highlighted by a chrome beltline (available on S, EX and SX) that melds into the D-pillar for a streamlined appearance. And the optional two-tone roof gives Seltos an added layer of coolness and character. Other key design cues include:

  • Long wheelbase and hood for a robust and substantial look
  • Harmonized grille and headlamp design featuring full LED “Beat” lighting for a modern appearance (SX)
  • Aggressive lower front bumper design provides a sharper approach angle for adventurous driving
  • Front and rear skid plates and black wheel arch cladding reference off-road abilities
  • Sleek and tapering greenhouse conveys athleticism
  • Eye-catching red wheel center caps hint at performance
  • Tailgate garnish connects rear lamps to create a sense of width and stability
  • Sculpted dual exhaust outlets highlight power and are connected by chrome trim to emphasize premium status
  • Eye-catching 17-, and 18-inch alloy wheels give Seltos an up-level appearance and stance befitting its bold personality

The Seltos’ interior design continues the theme of upscale adventure:

A cabin crafted with meticulous attention to detail helps Seltos punch above its weight class
Wide instrument panel has a high-tech feel with an asymmetrical design that skews toward the driver
Spacious and versatile cabin with generous hip, shoulder, leg and headroom in both rows, offering more interior volume than most rivals
An abundance of cargo space that can be expanded by lowering the adjustable luggage board

The Seltos delivers a tremendous amount of roominess and comfort. Even back seat passengers will get to stretch out thanks to the rear reclining feature. And while they’re kicked back and relaxing, you can lower the rear luggage board to increase cargo space. When there’s nobody in the back and you need some extra room for larger items, fold the rear seat down and lift the luggage board for a flat loading surface allowing expansive cargo volume. Whichever way you fold it, split it or lift it, the Seltos is a leader in its class when it comes to space and versatility.

Adventure in Style

The Seltos outclasses its class with an upscale look and feel throughout its well-appointed cabin. Whether it’s a quick trip around town or a longer sojourn “into the wild,” owner and occupants will enjoy premium details and convenience features such as:

Clean and sophisticated gauge cluster – 3.5”-in. OLED (LX, S, EX) and 7-in. Supervision (SX)
Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob (S, EX, SX)
Sliding front console cover (S, EX, SX)
Fractal pattern Bose2 speakers and six sophisticated color themes echo the sound connected mood lighting found in the iconic Soul. The mood light changes color and intensity based on volume level (SX).
Rear air vent and USB charging port for the convenience of backseat passengers (EX and SX)
Two-step reclining rear seat functionality enhances second-row comfort level (standard on all trims)

Well-Engineered Machine

Seltos is engineered to deliver a comfortable, capable and confidence-inspiring experience for both driver and passengers. A number of elements contribute to Seltos’ composed ride and lively driving performance:

2.0-liter four-cylinder MPI engine producing 146 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque, managed by an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) (LX, S and EX)
1.6-liter Turbo GDI engine outputting 175 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) (S and SX)
MacPherson strut front suspension; Coupled Torsion Beam Axle (CTBA) rear suspension on front-wheel-drive models and Multi-link rear suspension on all-wheel-drive models
Strong and rigid body composed of 61 percent advanced high-strength steel and further enhanced with 374 feet of structural adhesives
Choice of three drive modes – Normal, Eco, Sport – each using specific settings for powertrain, drivetrain and steering mapping to provide the desired driving experience
Available active on-demand all-wheel drive1 (AWD) system, similar in technological design to the award-winning Telluride, provides all-weather capabilities and enhanced driving performance with a center locking differential that splits power equally between the front and rear wheels for more severe environments. The AWD system also makes use of torque vectoring, which increases traction by predicting which wheel will best utilize power in a given on-road situation. This enhances stability in corners and gives the vehicle more connection to the road.

Teeming with Technology — Connectivity, Safety, Driver Assistance

Seltos is packed with technology features, including the“Kia Drive Wise” suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems as well as a wide array of standard and optional equipment. Tech highlights include:

Available 10.25-inch high-resolution color touchscreen3 with satellite radio, UVO telematics, navigation and split-screen display.
First time in Kia available 8-speaker Bose2 premium sound system
Apple CarPlay4 and Android Auto5

Available three total USB charging ports
Available multi-Bluetooth7 wireless connectivity allows two phones to connect simultaneously

Driver Attention Warning (DAW)9: Senses inattentive driving patterns and sends an audible/visual warning to alert the driver.
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection (FCA): Assists the driver in braking to help prevent a collision or lessen the effects in certain conditions if a vehicle or pedestrian is detected in front.
