Earth Day | Green Driving Tips
Monday, April 22, 2019, is Earth Day. Earth Day is celebrated as a way to remind people to treat our plant with care. Here are some “green” driving tips to help you contribute to Earth Day and Beyond.
Work with friends and family to try to carpool as often as you can. If you are planning on catching a Rockies game this spring and summer, or you are heading to Mile High to cheer on the Broncos in the fall, make the trip with as few vehicles as possible. If you live near someone you work with, work together to make a plan to carpool once or twice a week.
If you need to make a trip to the grocery store, think about other errands you can do and bundle them into one trip. This could be as simple as hitting all your stops in one evening on your way home from work. It may take a chunk of time out of your evening, but it will reduce the amount of fuel you use.
Change Your Driving Habits
Something as simple as speeding can lead to a decrease in your fuel efficiency. As a matter of fact, “aggressive” driving can increase your fuel usage by up to 40% according to eartheasy.com. Practice accelerating gradually and braking slowly. Not only is this a safer way to drive, but it will also help improve your fuel efficiency.
Remove Excess Weight From Your Car
Getting rid of the junk in your trunk will really help your car be more fuel efficient over time. We all know that it’s easy to pack things away in your trunk or back seat, but doing so can lead to a decrease in fuel efficiency. For every 100 pounds of excess weight in your car, you can lose 1-2% in fuel economy.
Get a New Car
That old thing from the 1990s is probably not very fuel efficient. Not only is it an older vehicle with limited technology, but its motor is probably not in pristine condition after all these years. Each new model of car is usually more fuel efficient than its predecessor. Newer cars are also lighter than older ones, which gives them an advantage when it comes to fuel efficiency. There has also been an increase in the number of hybrid and all-electric car options to help save the planet from fuel emissions.
